From Struggle to Solution: Documentation with Unfolio

We created Unfolio, a webapp for unschooling families, to simplify daily documentation of spontaneous learning experiences. We'd love your input via our product roadmap survey.

From Struggle to Solution: Documentation with Unfolio

In our last post, we discussed the importance of documentation in unschooling. Today, we want to share our family's personal journey with documentation and introduce you to a solution we developed: Unfolio.

Like many unschooling families, we recognized the value of documenting our children's learning experiences. However, we quickly found ourselves struggling to find the right tools for the job. Traditional planners felt too rigid, and scattered notes in various apps or notebooks made it difficult to see the big picture of our unschooling journey. Frustrated by the lack of suitable options, we decided to take matters into our own hands. Drawing on our tech background, we set out to create a web application that would meet the unique needs of unschooling families. And thus, Unfolio was born.

Unfolio is designed with the unschooling philosophy at its core. Instead of focusing on planning (which often goes out the window in the dynamic world of unschooling), we built Unfolio around daily documentation. Each day, we simply record what happened - the activities, discoveries, conversations, and experiences that made up our day. This approach aligns perfectly with the spontaneous nature of unschooling. We're not trying to fit our experiences into predetermined categories or subjects. Instead, we're capturing the rich tapestry of learning as it naturally unfolds.

With all our notes stored in a database, we can then leverage the power of AI to generate summaries of our activities, and use our documentation in other interesting ways. The summaries serve as excellent documentation of learning, providing a clear overview of the skills, knowledge, and experiences our children have gained over time. But the potential of Unfolio doesn't stop there. We're excited about the various ways we might use this wealth of data in the future:

  1. Identifying patterns and interests: By analyzing our notes over time, we can spot recurring themes or growing interests that we might want to support further.
  2. Creating portfolios: We can easily compile subject-specific or time-period portfolios for college applications or other purposes.
  3. Tracking progress: While unschooling isn't about measuring against standardized benchmarks, it can be encouraging to see how skills and interests develop over time.
  4. Memory keeping: Our daily notes will serve as a detailed record of our family's journey, capturing not just academic learning but also personal growth, family experiences, and the small moments that make up our lives.
  5. Resource organization: By tagging resources we've used or discovered, we can create a personalized database of books, websites, games, and other materials that have supported our learning.

We've found Unfolio to be a game-changer in our unschooling journey, and we believe it could be valuable for other families too. That's why we're working towards making Unfolio available to the broader unschooling community. We want to ensure that Unfolio truly meets the needs of diverse unschooling families. That's where you come in. We've created a product roadmap survey, and we'd love your input. What features would be most useful to you? How would you like to see Unfolio grow and evolve?

Your feedback will directly influence the development of Unfolio, helping us create a tool that serves the unschooling community in the best way possible. Whether you're a tech-savvy family looking for advanced features or someone seeking a simple, user-friendly solution, we want to hear from you.

By participating in our survey, you'll not only be shaping a tool that could benefit your own family but also contributing to a resource that could support the broader unschooling movement. Together, we can create a solution that makes documentation easier, more insightful, and more valuable for unschoolers everywhere.
